Play Xbox Games on Your Cell Phone

Imagine playing what looks like an Xbox 360 game -- on a US$100 cell phone. That, according to Remi Pedersen, graphics product manager at ARM, is exactly what could be possible as soon as winter 2009 with its new higher-end Mali-200 and Mali-400 processors.

Even though he won't discuss individual chip prices, Mali mobile GPUs are already showing up in some phones. The 65nm Mali-55 is a first generation core in LG Electronics' Renoir phone. Partnered with an Arm CPU, that phone runs Flash, but has no shader capabilities. But at least it gets some props for being a tiny OpenGL ES GPU -- good for 3D gaming. (For a little perspective, the [iPhone ]supports OpenGL ES 1.1 as well.)

Pedersen promises 4x Anti-Aliasing out of Mali -- and up to 16x without taxing the system too much. But give it a few months and expect to see handsets rocking the Mali-200 GPU. This is where it'll get interesting: OpenGL ES 2.0 is completely shader-based, a subset desktop code. Difference is, it removes cluttered code but keeps vertex and pixel shaders. It'll run 16 million triangles/second, 275 million pixels/second. And, yep, it'll be able to run Flash and Java games.

The Mali-400 has the same basic performance, according to Pedersen, but is multicore scalable: From a single-core 100MHz mali-400 scaling up to quad-core at 300MHz. It can even scale to produce 1080p resolutions. (ARM even gave me a projected chart for how they see the market going in the next few years).

Considering the potential horsepower I had to check, but Pedersen tells me that, "If you're targeting a low-powered design, I doubt we'll see phone overclocking. It sure would be interesting to see, though."

What I find equally interesting is the work around a software engine. Before the handset design is fixed, ARM is working closely with several 3rd party developers. "It gives us a better view of how different systems will perform. Take feedback from developers to create the next gen CPUs and the silicon partners." Developers usually come late to the party, they get a handset and have to figure out what to do from there.

But at the Game Developers' Conference in San Francisco this coming week, Pedersen gave me a tease to show what the GPU can do: We'll be able to see a port of Project Gotham Racer (Xbox 1) running in OpenGL ES. "Performance-wise, it runs like the original Xbox, but feature-wise it looks like an Xbox 360 title," he says. I can't wait to see what else they have on display.

iPhone game roundup - Terminator Salvation, Topple 2

News from Gameloft about its new Terminator Salvation game, based on the movie, Ngmoco's sequel to a best-selling game, the unlikely iSperm and a game that will take you back to the days of Dragon's Lair are what tops this week's iPhone game roundup.

Terminator Salvation coming in May

Terminator Salvation is the new action movie featuring Christian Bale, planned for release on May 22, 2009. Gameloft has announced plans to release an iPhone game based on the movie on the same day. Set in 2018, John Connor leads the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators.

The game features "stack attack" in which you play against other player in real time, new modes like upside-down, balance, power tower and rescue. It costs US$3.

iSperm

It sounds unlikely, but somehow [iSperm] has made it through the App Store vetting process. This arcade game has you as a single sperm cell fighting your way to an egg. It has three phases that require you to shake, tilt and multi-tap your iPhone or iPod touch. It's $1.

Don Bluth's Banjo the Woodpile Cat Adventure Game

3-Point Skills Challenge

[3-Point Skills Challeng] is a $2 basketball game, arriving just in time for March madness. You can pick from one of 60 players, each based on real NBA players. Each player has a different shot rhythm, athletic ability and accuracy. There are four different play modes, and you can play with up to eight of your friends.

Mathemagics

[Mathemagics] is a $2 educational game that helps you learn the tricks of mental math calculation. You can play practice sessions to test your skills and then practice what you've learned through various levels of proficiency.

iWire

[iWire] costs $1. You have to ride the wire without getting too close. The farther you can stay, the higher your score--you can get mulitipliers depending on your speed.

BMW Z4 - An Expression of Joy

[BMW Z4 - An Expression of Joy] is a free game based on BMW's Z4 Roadster. You can create drawings using the Z4 as your brush; the Z4 has been created to BMW specifications.

Sentinel 1.1

Origin8 has released an update to [Sentinel], its sci-fi-themed tower defense game. New to this release is a fast forward button, a friend challenge feature, minor bug fixes and more. It costs $5.

G.I. Joyride

Five Fingers Games Bundle

The [Five Fingers Games Bundle] combines five games from five different developers for $5. It includes Blackbeard's Assault, a match three game, BurnBall, in which you tilt the screen to move Roy around, Chopper, a side-scrolling helicopter game, Sneezies, a chain reaction game, and Up There, a game in which you tilt the iPhone back and forth to help your balloon escape.

Gillette debuts gaming razor - wait, what?

Bro3.png

yeah, that's right. Sick of watching everybody else cash in on the eternal cashcow that is gaming merchandise, Gillette have released a razor targeted specifically at gamers.

The Fusion Gamer is no different from the other Fusion products, but instead of using the tired trio of Tiger, Roger and Derek in real life, they've been replaced with pixelated version that look like in-game characters.

Queries to Gillette here have been fruitless, mostly because I can't stop laughing my ass off on the phone.

keen to Play Tabula Rasa? Too late, sucka!

NCsoft's failed game, Tabula Rasa, died a relatively quiet death last night.

The developers shut down its final servers, after urging players to unite for one last time to fight off a mass of enemies converging on the city.

Despite relatively good reviews and early anticipation, the MMORPG failed to live up to its promise. Richard Garriott (aka Lord British aka Astronaut aka personification of weird) designed the game, but abandoned the team shortly after to pursue his longtime dream of going to space.

Check out a video of the final moments in the game after the jump
