Someone from Radio New Zealand just phoned me for comment on a new Google stat: apparently Aucklanders are the most miserable people on the planet, judging by the frequency we search for depression-related terms. My theory: The Googlistas are just failing to realise that every search for 'Auckland Blues' is not necessarily related to misery (oh, hang on ...). Leave your theory in the 'Comments' section and be in to win one of 5 cheering PC World CD wallets (misery loves company at pcworld.co.nz).

Speaking of Google, the search/advertising/everything giant launched its Australia-New Zealand headquarters today, which sports a mock tracter beam and houses 30 staff (75% sales and 25% engineers) but room for 200. The HQ is in Darling Harbour, Sydney, but Google is currently advertising for NZ-specific staff ...

disagree about people from n.z. being the most miserable buggers - u.k. husbands are far worse!!!

A query: "Pack of miserable bastards" to Google didn't bring up a link to Auckland. It did find a reference to the Australian High Court.

Google seems to have forgetten that searching for emotional words in no way indicates a person's emotional state. After all there is a clothes label names "Misery" and a band named "Misery". There is also the fact that they may be searching because they know someone they know is miserable. or it may even be nothing to do with either.

I wonder if anyone has clicked yet that 'misery' is also the name of a fairly popular clothes designer (and her brand) here in Auckland, maybe Aucklanders aren't that depressed after all, maybe we just like looking good clothes.

They are sad because they know that all too soon their Motorways will be completely blocked by slow moving traffic and also they are going to be short of Electricity.

They live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world and should be very happy.

Everyone that moves to Auckland from down south only do it to get a job. Aucklanders move down south for a better lifestyle.

I'm not surprised they are depressed

Not to appear parochial, but as I look out my office window this beautiful, crisp autum day and contemplate the sparkling waters of the Waitemata (a playground the likes of which I have not seen anywhere else in the world), I feel compelled to search for the meaning of the word misery. For as long as I am lucky enough to live in this beautiful, gentle land I'll need to use the internet lest I forget the rest of the world is not as lucky as we are.
