Some scenes from Microsoft's Windows Vista launch at Dick Smith's Power House store in Manakau last night - wherein All Black Dan Carter became the first person in the world to buy a copy of the new OS (loaded on an HP laptop that Carter immediately donated to a Cure Kids charity auction on TradeMe. Started your bidding here). Just quietly, February NZ PC World also slipped onto newsstands last night. Check it out. It includes a 52-page bonus magazine on Vista and Office 2007.

The countdown begins.

3-2-1 ... we have Windows. Carter, centre, makes his purchase. Left: MC Pat Pilcher. Right: Microsoft NZ Marketing Director Brent Colbert.

Now that I have Vista, I just have to work out how to use it.

Ah, here are the instructions.

Don't take on an All Black: despite a vigorous effort, former TV3 sportscaster Clint Brown has to settle for being the second person in the world to buy Vista.

The crowd goes wild.

Graham Saywell, who queued in a deck chair from 8.30pm, became the first person in the world to buy a standalone copy of Vista, and (we think, our elves are still checking) - to buy a copy of Microsoft Office 2007 system plus an HP laptop signed by Dan for good measure.

Dan gets stuck into his work signing PC World posters. Actually, said posters are now just sitting in the boot of my car, but we'll think of something to do with them. You know, for the kids.

Hi, Im bidding on trade me for Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student Edition so I may be the official second owner if I win!!! LOL

I'd have to agree with Graham as I was standing right next to him at the time, and definately, his purchase was the first....no doubt about that.

Graham, alot of device drivers and programs are not compatible with Vista yet. Something they didn't tell you before you bought it. lol. Congrats on being the first person to actually purchase it though.

Marketing Ploy for sure. But for a cause most worthy of such a ploy. Go Dan and Microsoft for donating the proceeds to CureKids. And the ploy worked too. Steve Ballmer mentioned the NZ publicity stunt on the big stage at the global launch event in New York. An unexpected outcome I guess but the sound bite is great for New Zealands profile around the world.

"Daniel Carter becomes first person in the world to read February PC World" - I disagree my copy arrived in the post around 11am yesterday

Wow - two comments so far and both negative.... Well done Vista!
I think I'll stick with Kubuntu64.
But I'm not really biased.. hell no LOL

My integrated graphics isn't up to the task of Vista. Very sad.

Can anyone say marketing ploy? :)

Hi, Graham here, I feel sure I was the first person in the world to buy a laptop with Vista, as it seemed that Daniel did not pay for his, and my receipt is timed at 00.00 on the 30th. Also I was definately the first person to pay at the cash registers!

One problem, I have found Woosh does not support Vista, so looks like my new laptop will be going on TradeMe also!

Cheers.
