Sony selling boat loads of PS3's
While we’ve no hard evidence of sales other than what Sony are telling us they’ve sold, it seems the PS3 is selling very well indeed. This is hardly a surprise, after all, PlayStation owners are a loyal bunch and the machine itself is highly covetable despite the high price tag.
The Europeans have apparently soaked up 165,000 PS3’s while the Aussies have nabbed 20,000. Pre-orders of 7000 units in this country make the launch a roaring success for Sony and the confirm the PS3 as one scorching hot product.
These figures will go some way to sooth the bruises dealt to Sonys ego by the lacklustre launch events we reported earlier this week. Gary Wright over at Gameplanet tells us the PS3’s midnight launch at their Auckland store had just 15 hardy souls turn up. This compares rather unflatteringly with an estimated 150 fans who turned up for each of the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii launch nights.

You guys need to consider this data before you make silly comments. Most of these reports are from Sony press releases or analysts who have the IQ of a potato. Sony spent 4 months building up their inventory and then dropped 1 million consoles on shelves. These sales figures represent 4 months of pent-up demand. This was Sony's way of crowing they sold more in their Euro launch than MS or Nintendo. But the truth is MS and Nintendo sold everything they could get on the shelves in their first 6 months. Sony has stock all over the place. Bottom line is in 6 months the 360 sold 4.5 mil units and in 4 the Wii over 5 mil. After 4 months the PS3 is at 2.5 mil. They will not sell 2 mil units in 2 months. In fact, unless they drastically drop their price they will not sell 7 mil consoles in one year.

Listen up all u Xbox fanboys. SOLD SOLD SOLD!!! Pre order or not, SOLD means SOLD!! U want to talk about availability?? XBOX did it on purpose not to release a greater amount of consoles just for this reason. So fools like u can say 'ohh ps3 has loads in stock where the 360 sold out'!! It's a shrewd peice of marketing but only the dumbasses fall for such crap. And the 360 launch was NOT just at one place, u should see the stunts they tried to pull in Paris, no one even turned up. EVERYONE agrees the PS3 is a better console, not it's just about preference. Come 2 years we'll see who wins the war so keep yr knickers on 360 boys.

I would like to comment that these figures are likely to be incorrect. Its only media hype and non-committed analytics through which this information was derived. wait till the NDP group release the statistics, i dont believe it was as crash hot as it sounds. and even considering this the sales for the ps3 are still out weighted 2-1 by the nintendo..... i hope they do pick up, but i reckon personally that these figures are just hype. as i said before, wait for the NDP group to do an official report

does it really matter if they are pre sold or sold? The key word is sold isnt it?

I think the press jumped to conclusion about the mid-night sale events. Weren't they the ones that scared everyone away from the mid-night launches in the first place due to their over blown coverage of how the PS3 launch may turn into anarchy: robberies, shooting, rioting, etc. No one turned up because they didn't want to be killed when they knowingly had pre-orders to safely use in the morning or could wait until morning for a chance to find a unit since Sony generously stocked Europe with a massive boat load of PS3s. Regardless, way to go Sony, you deserved this good turn out after enduring months of unfair negatively-slanted online news coverage.

165000 units sold, and how many of those were preordered? Of course the figures are nice because Sony has been taking preorders much longer time than Wii or X360 (because of the delay).

I think it should be remembered that X360 and Wii did not have the same availability of preorders, and additionally with Wii and X360 launch parties, they were only at one place. Even here in Adelaide, there were over four stores having midnight openings. Even when the PS2 launched here, there was only one store open for midnight launch. With more stores, the people will quite obviously be more distributed - so all the reports about the midnight launches are no real indicator at all with so many stores open.
