« Vista RC2 out tomorrow - is it the final pre-release? | Main | Preliminary Vodem test results »

Surprise! The tiny little Vodem arrived today, without my having to hand over my first-born as a hostage for the review period.

And this is what it looks like:

It really is small as you can see, with the USB cable (two connectors, one for additional power if needed) being almost incongruously big for the Vodem.

Installation on XP is plug and play as promised, but I'm having SIM issues at the moment so will have to try out the Vodem performance after that's sorted out.

The Vodem shows up as a CD Drive in Explorer:

and this is what the software client for connecting to the network looks like:

Not sure why it's wonky like that - could be the 1680*1050 screen on this Lenovo N100 that I'm using.

Now to fix the SIM issue.

Comments

Have noticed that software is buggy - it doesn't seem to handle the laptop going to sleep/standby at all for instance.

I understand that Vodafone's about to release an update for the firmware. Waiting to hear from them about it at the moment.

Speed-wise the Vodem ain't half bad but it does lock onto a 3G cell site nearby though. This is on Auckland's North Shore and I understand that people in Wellington find the Vodem switches between GPRS and 3G a lot there.

I am also unhappy with the Vodem. Crashes on a regular basis and I only get 2G reception. What can you do?

Very unhappy with the Vodem. Crashes on a regular basis, can't boot my laptop with the Vodem connected, also as mentioned above there are times when you have to completely disconnect the thing to get it working again.

I rang Vodafone and I think they are getting alot of compliants as they didn't even try and argue when I asked to return it.

It's wonky on my ASUS W5000 also (1280x768), have tried 3 different Vodems all with the same result. Perhaps its just buggy software like all the previous GPRS, 3G software from Vodafone to date. Otherwise very happy with the increased speed.
