25 Mbit/s broadband in New Zealand

Only on TelstraClear cable in Wellington and Christchurch though.
Looks like those of you within reach of TCL cable will get your speeds seriously bumped up by the end end of the year, from 10Mbit/s max to 25Mbit/s, according to today's announcement.
The Smales Farm crowd has spent $1.2 million - which is pretty cheap - on a new Motorola system to provide the enhanced speeds; unfortunately, the announcement is skimpy on details such as upload speed, but TCL says "the back end capability" is complete, so I hope this means the network will go as fast as the advertised speed.
What's good is that TCL doesn't mind if you run VPNs, VoIP or VoD over its network - none of your walled garden rubbish there, but... how about that peering issue again, TCL? Sorted or are we still "tromboning" traffic overseas, with some NZ sites unreachable?
I am also a little surprised that there are only 70,000 customers on the cable network. Expected it to be around twice that, but perhaps the price isn't quite right yet?

Juha said 20Mb download soon? I had 600 bits/sec to 7.7kb/s and was looking at 1day12hrs for my data.Went to friends business o'night, used encrypted bittorrent feed via proxy server and burned 25 cd's very quickly. Linux box too,not SP3 with its popular DRM program running. Every disc I got was as a backup for an original I've already purchased. Why could I not make my backups on my XP3 box? and why did the ISP throttle my feed down to zero when I tried at home? Just wanted backups for my origies,is all.

I'd happily make that 70,001 customers if they enlarged their Christchurch coverage...

Once you finally get onto the service (cable) it is great aside from a few outages here and there; that speed increase would be awesome. My connection just walks over my girlfriends (fast as your line will go). Just there customer service is really poor, it is a small price to pay for quality broadband. The last flat I was at in Welly couldn’t get the cable because it was down behind some flats, so not everyone can get it.

Good point... the data caps need to go up 150 per cent as well (at least). Will keep an eye on that.

Great should be able to burn thru the 10 Gig Data cap in 5 minutes instead of ten
