Update: Some interesting numbers coming in. More please! (Check the Comments section to see how you compare.)
The lead in this week's print edtion of ComputerWorld has Telecom promising 24Mbit/s broadband connections by the end of this year. How does that compare with what you've got now? Well check out Consumer magazine's Broadband Speed Test. Here's what I got from my TelstraClear HighSpeed 20GB connection...
That translates to a transfer rate of 236.8 KB/sec download and 183.8 KB/sec upload.
What numbers do you get? Post a comment and we'll compare... (The winner of a copy of Norton Save & Restore in our random Comments draw was Brian Wheeler - CK.)

Hi, Just thought if anybody actually knows where you can take these results to get something done about it.
After all in the advertising of most ISP's it tells what you can get, but in reality you NEVER do, is this not misleading advertising?
You pay for a service but actually only get a bit of it ?
Any thoughts on this?

Aja

Hello,
We have been having problems with Cable connection off and on for quite some time now.
We are on the LightSpeed 40 plan, speeds on this plan vary from 800KBps down to 231KBps, since change over of equipment in Lower Hutt at TelstraClear we are way down in speed, the only time we get good download speeds is after midnight, not much use to most of us.
We got a large selection of speed snapshots taken over a period of time.
Nothing to what the website blurb says, way down form what is advertised.
To top it all of if you complain about it too much you get stonewalled, they probably hope you go elsewhere.
Regards,
Aja

You made a mistake on quoteing your connection. You mean 2MB 20 gig Cap Telstra? not 20gig connection which indicates speed, there is a big difference, maybe you should post a correction as it make the Telstra connection look a little stupid. You also listed it as 20gig in your results there.
** Well spotted, Battleneter. Corrections posted!

This was my previous account with Xtra, the 3.5 Mbps plan
Download Speed: 507 kbps (63.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 130 kbps (16.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
This was made at 7pm on Tuesday night 20/6/06.
Now I am with Telstra and on Monday 26/6/06 I got this:
Download Speed: 1888 kbps (236 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1683 kbps (210.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
And that's just with a 2Mbps plan.
Hah Telecom I say, your out of my radar now. Christchurch by the way.
