On October 26, the new eco-friendly, non-monopolistic, ComCom-cuddling Telecom opens the tap on all its broadband plans. From that date "your download connection will be as fast as your line allows." So now's the time to start testing.

Forget numbers like 256 kbps and 3.5 Mbps, in the new plans all download speeds are simply "Max". But will you be blown away by the results? Or will Max turn out to be the latest in a long line of Telecom dogs?

To find out, run this Broadband Speed Test now and note down your results in the Comments section of this blog. Next week, once Max has been unleashed, I'll remind you again and we can compare the numbers.

I think im winning in upload speed right now ;)

1924 kbps down
124 kpbps up

On Ihug "Broadband 2" plan, with claimed maximum speed of 7600/128, in suburban Wellington.

The MAX/MAX my line will allow ?..
What a scam,scam, scam.@TELECOM

This isn't using that speedtest - I'll do that soon, but right now I'm downloading this torrent and its at 400kB/s Download and 50KB/s Upload.

Telecom Go Large(ly without real broadband)

Telecom test okay
nzdsl testreasonable
Cnet test horrible (112 download and 128 upload)

Telcom is taking pretty much all its customer for a ride when they promise soemthing that they cannot deliver.

xtra Go Large (Yeah right)

Download: 4266
upload: 126

real download speed for international files 126k. Was fine for a few days there but slowly dropped away to twice dialup...Great job Xtra.

The MAX my line will allow hmm..
What a disgusting scam.

6942 down, 724 up - using nzdsl speed test - pretty happy, but I'm close to an exchange in the Wanganui CBD, using Xtra with Orcons DNS settings. I think the package is Explorer Pro?

Further to earlier comments I remain disappointed at the very small increase in speed I am obtaining. However in fairness I wonder if the DSL test is that accurate.
A check at http://www.jetstreamgames.co.nz/speed/1MB.html often shows a download speed three times higher than that at DSL.

Looking at the above speeds makes me feel sick.

XTRA C***!

I'm shocked at the upload speed of broadband. Im a home user and only send e-mails and surf web and my dial up speeds are 43kbs down and 822kbs. External dialup modems are the way to go for outgoing messages by the look of it. This was taken at 1.15pm on Monday (peak time)and are much faster offpeak.

Before:
2580 download
80 upload

Now:
1203 down
129 up

On Xtra Explorer. Tested several days/times to check for temporary problem but all within the same ballpark. Same would be OK, but worse really sucks!

I am getting

3000kbps down
120kbps up

On Go Large

Funny thing is I left ihug because downloading demos, linux etc was impossible. Now on go large surfing is impossible ahhhh!!!

Xtra Go Large
Download: 10 KB/s (used to be 240 KB/s)
Upload: 6.1 KB/s (can't remember what it used to be, but was much faster)

Taken at 1.42AM (offpeak), am not on fair use policy as it has been like this since my plan rolled over on 26th, which makes it almost impossible to go over 700MB even if I tried.
To Xtra's credit, they have admitted problems with Go Large since it rolled out on the 26th.

Orcon Pro (Up max, down max), Porirua.
Download Speed: 6153 kbps (769.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 640 kbps (80 KB/sec transfer rate)

What about the ping times?

Hi Pat,

I'm in Oratia, Auckland. My ADSL (thru Iconz) is completely down-burger and has been that way since about Nov 1.

When it first went in (about 12 months ago) it used to be a bit intermittent, i.e. would go down for entire evening then come up the following day.

For the last few months it's been rock solid, but now no worky.

Have tried second router, no luck. I suspect all the additional traffic has degraded my signal (quite far from exchange) to the extent it has simply kicked me off. Not so much "unleashed" as "unplugged".

Xtra Everyday plan

Down: 1495

Is this the joy of living in the country (Wairarapa?)

Monday afternoon.

I have found that the upload is insufficient to sustain satisfactory video link with the UK on Skype.

Further to my earlier comment. Have now tested for 5 days regularly. Normal best download around 2050/2100 kbps. On busy periods has dropped to 961 kbps. All this using DSL test. Telecom test at www.jetstreamgames.co.nz/speed produces better results sometimes materially so. However as was getting 1930 kbps before purported increases am disappointed.Expected much better!!

When the dsl carrier is not down intermittently, since 24th October (sometimes every 4 minutes sometimes I'm on for 20 minutes), on Explorer, haven't changed yet
Download speed 3847 Kbps
Upload speed 121 Kpbs

Anyone else havong problems staying connected? I'm in Torbay, Auckland

Not much of an increase and believe download speed now drops to lower levels at busy periods. Will keep records and advise.

I am 4.3km away from the Glenfield exchange. I have called Xtra and there is no solution to get any more out of my connection. Heavy resistance on the line and distance from the exchange.

The only option for me is to go Woosh or wait for Wimax.

Am connected over copper to a local box with a Conklin appox 1.1 km distant. I think that the Conklin was introduced about 2 years ago as a low cost solution but that it has backhaul limitations.

Three results from central Wellington recorded at 10.30am on 23 October (a public holiday).

Up 534

Since Thursday, my router reports

DownStream Connection Speed 7616 kbps (up from 4200)
UpStream Connection Speed 928 kbps (up from 560)
