Why does a Windows 7 upgrade cost so much? Robert X. Cringely thinks he has the answer:

Microsoft doesn’t actually want you to upgrade to Windows 7 at all. Microsoft wants you to buy a new Windows 7 PC instead.

and

...have you actually done a Windows 7 upgrade? Mine took seven hours! It shouldn’t have to take that long unless part of the goal was simply to discourage upgrading.

Karmic is much faster to upgrade or install :)

I have done a couple of in-place upgrades from Vista and it has taken just over an hour on 3 year old hardware. Only fails I have seen so far are if you have non compatible av software installed and with Cisco VPN - both of which we ignored warnings for to see what would happen. We even upgraded a VB workstation that was itself upgraded from XP Pro; runs fine.

Then why was Windows 7 offered as an upgrade with new Vista PCs sold. I don't get the option of a clean install, and I only just brought the laptop so I'm not going to replace it!
Better not take seven hours...

I did a fresh install with Windows 7 Pro (from vista ultimate) and i had everything backed up, installed and replaced as usual within a few hours, the actual windows 7 install took less than half an hour and installed pretty much all the drivers for me.. Trust me its not as bad as anyone says..
